FOUNDATIONS, LAYER BY LAYER

Everything you see above ground stands on several layers below it. Scroll to see them for a reinforced slab or a strip foundation. Below is a calculator for how much concrete you need.

01/ 06Foundations

The excavation

The topsoil is stripped, the ground is dug down to firm soil and the bottom is compacted. How deep to dig depends on the design and the ground conditions at the site.

For a slab, the whole area under the building is excavated.

For a strip foundation, trenches are dug under the walls.

Bottom

The gravel

A compacted layer of gravel. It spreads the load and stops moisture rising from the soil.

The blinding

A thin layer of lean concrete. It gives a clean, level base so that the reinforcement sits at the right height.

Thickness
5 to 10 cm

The waterproofing

A bitumen membrane that stops moisture passing from the soil into the concrete and into the walls above it.

For a strip foundation, the waterproofing also wraps the sides of the strip.

The reinforcement

Concrete takes the compression, steel takes the tension. The reinforcement sits on spacers so that concrete covers it on all sides.

In a slab, these are two meshes, bottom and top.

In a strip, these are longitudinal bars and links tied into a cage.

The concrete

It is poured in one go and vibrated so that no air bubbles remain. Then it is kept wet for a few days while it gains strength.

Whole system

The whole foundation

Above ground, only the top surface of the concrete remains. Change the foundation type at the top right or in the calculator below.

What is included

WHAT WE DO

01

Excavation and levelling

Stripping the topsoil, excavation, carting away the spoil, levelling and compaction.

02

Formwork and reinforcement

Formwork to the dimensions in the design, and reinforcement tied and checked before the concrete.

03

Reinforced concrete slab

A slab under the whole building, with gravel, blinding and waterproofing beneath it.

04

Strip foundations and pads

Strips under the walls and individual pads under the columns.

Calculator

HOW MUCH CONCRETE YOU NEED

Choose the foundation type and enter the dimensions. The calculator gives the concrete volume with a margin, the number of truck mixers and the layers under the foundation.

Foundation type
Concrete with a 5% margin…m³
Truck mixers, 8 m³ each
… loads
Compacted gravel
… m³
Blinding
… m³

The concrete class, the reinforcement and the depth come from the structural design. The calculator covers volumes only. The calculation is approximate and is not a quote.

How it goes

HOW IT GOES

  1. 01

    Site visit

We look at the ground, the access for machinery and where the building will stand.

  2. 02

    Setting out

The grid lines from the design are marked on the ground with pegs and string lines.

  3. 03

    Excavation

Down to firm soil, with a compacted bottom.

  4. 04

    Formwork and rebar

Formwork, reinforcement and anchors set by template. Everything is measured before the concrete.

  5. 05

    Concrete

Poured in one go, vibrated and then kept wet.

  6. 06

    Curing

The concrete gains strength for about two weeks. It is not loaded during that time.

Questions

COMMON QUESTIONS

It depends on the soil, the building and the design. A slab spreads the load over the whole area; strips carry it under the walls.

Down to firm soil and below the frost line. The exact depth is in the design.

Concrete gains strength for about two weeks. How long to wait before loading it is set by the design.

Yes, with admixtures in the concrete and with covers, but in a hard frost we wait.
