The paint is the last millimetre of the wall. Under it are five more layers, each done at its own time. Scroll to see them, and work out the materials for one room below.
The brick wall. In a renovation, the old finish is first taken back to a sound base, and cracks are opened up and filled.
Cables and pipes run in chases in the wall, before the plaster. Electrical boxes are set so that the cover plate later sits flush on the wall.
It levels the wall and closes the chases. It is applied between guide beads so that the wall is straight over its full height.
Two thin coats, sanded in between. They make the wall smooth to the touch and in raking light.
It evens out how much the skim coat absorbs. Without it the paint soaks in patchily and more of it is used.
Two coats of emulsion in the chosen colour. Switches and sockets go on last, over the paint.
From the room you see the paint and the socket. Everything else is inside, which is why it is done in order. Change the colour at the top right.

If one room is being painted, yes. With a full renovation involving strip-out and new services, usually not. We tell you after the site visit.
The services, then the plaster, then everything else. That is why the electrics and plumbing are decided at the start.
Each coat dries in about a day, depending on the temperature and humidity in the room. It is sanded between coats.
Either way works. We supply them or work with yours; it is agreed in the quote.
